FAMILY-CENTERED CATECHESIS

The family is the spiritual center from which children need to grow. It is the most basic way in which God gathers us to serve and worship him. Through this close personal relationship children experience their first image of God. Parents have the serious responsibility of forming family members into the likeness of Christ. Choosing to raise Catholic children in today’s culture may not always be an easy task, but parents need to know that hours spent in faith formation is a worthwhile use of their time.

Marlene Sweeney, Director of Catechetical Ministry at St. James Parish in IL, writes, “What I have hoped to reel in for most of my catechetical life is family involvement in passing on our faith traditions. Since the family is the domestic Church in today’s world, I feel that as catechetical leaders we need to involve the entire family unit.” Catechetical programs can support, strengthen, and enhance family life.
